The next generation of embedded analytics
Table of Contents
In this episode of the Tekpon SaaS Podcast, host Cristian Dina sits down with Rogan Sage, the VP of Growth at Embeddable, to discuss the next generation of embedded analytics. The conversation offers an in-depth look at Embeddable, an advanced headless embedded analytics tool from the team behind Trevor IO, an internal business intelligence tool dating back to 2016.
What does Embeddable do?
Embeddable stands out by offering a headless approach, meaning customers can bring their front end while utilizing Embeddable’s backend capabilities. This deviates from traditional embedded analytics solutions, which often come boxed with a predefined front end that may not align seamlessly with a customer’s existing application. According to Rogan, most market solutions require extensive customization, consume valuable engineering resources, or offer suboptimal integration through iframes, resulting in poor user experiences.
Rogan explains how Embeddable addresses these issues by providing a React-based component library. This library allows developers to customize charts and embed them directly into their applications without compromising performance or aesthetics. This headless approach ensures fast loading times, seamless integration, and a look and feel that matches the host application. Furthermore, Embeddable eliminates the common pain points related to database connections, security, caching, and localization by managing these backend complexities for the user.
The Story of Embeddable
Cristian and Rogan then delve into the company’s origins and flagship product, Trevor IO. Established in 2016 by founders Tom and Harry, Trevor IO is designed to empower non-technical team members within organizations to query and manage their data easily. The tool has matured over the years, gaining the trust of smaller businesses that often upgrade from the free tier as their needs grow.
Rogan shares that Embeddable was conceived over a year ago in response to a clear market need. Thanks to the experienced team behind Trevor IO, they quickly transitioned from concept to product. Within four to five months, Embeddable onboarded its first user, and its adoption has since grown to include over 60 companies.
Rogan’s story
The conversation shifts to Rogan’s journey, both personal and professional. Rogan recounts his history with Tom from their days at an edtech startup in London and how their paths converged once again with Embeddable. With a background spanning various growth roles, Rogan brings a wealth of experience, making the challenges of leading go-to-market strategies in a technical niche more manageable.
He emphasizes the importance of starting early with customer engagements, outlining how Embeddable gathered initial interest and feedback, significantly shaping the product’s evolution. He also touches upon the balance required to achieve short-term results while setting the stage for long-term success, especially in a startup environment where resources and time are often limited.
Reflecting on his career, Rogan advises new graduates and early-career professionals to seize opportunities and continually seek to learn through doing. For founders, he underscores the value of seeking guidance when hiring for specialized roles to navigate the complex landscape of skills and expertise needed in a technical domain.
