Kasm Workspaces Platform

Kasm Workspaces helps companies deliver digital workspaces with the aid of their open-source web-native container streaming technology to develop the latest DevOps delivery of Desktop as a Service (DaaS), application streaming, and browser isolation. People can deploy this excellent software in a hybrid configuration, on-premises, or in the cloud.

How to use Kasm Workspaces

Kasm Workspaces is software that you can easily use. Below, we will discuss how to get Kasm Workspaces software to function on a single server. The installed components of this software are API services, Postgres database, Redis datastore, and a workspace agent responsible for orchestrating the docker containers.

The Kasm Workspaces software system requirements are more diminutive. However, the actual resources that will need to be provisioned are based on the number of user sessions required. Thus, you must have at least two cores, four gigabytes of RAM, and fifty gigabytes of free solid-state hard drive space to support a single session. Moreover, extra concurrent sessions will need increased computer and RAM resources.

First, you can download the latest Kasm Workspaces version and install it on ubuntu 18.04 and 20.04, Debian 9 and 10 Centos 7 and 8. Next, the installation begins by downloading the installation package, extracting the content, and running the installation script with Sudo privileges. Next, you will need to accept the license agreement. Also, the installer will install docker if it is not already installed and download the default set of workspaces app and desktop images.

You must know that it will take some minutes for the download and installation to get completed. You will get a warning if your system does not have a swap file or partition. Press “Why” and the enter button to go past the sign. Once you have completed the installation process, the installer will submit the platform credentials. Then, you must ensure that you save these credentials because you will need them to access the system.

System Install

You will need to create a swap file if your system doesn’t have a swap file. After the installation process, navigate the I.P. address of the server that Kasm was installed on. By default, you will get a security warning that the site is not trusted. This is because the installation generates a self-signed SSL certificate. To ensure that users don’t get a security warning, you will need a cert signed by a public certificate authority. Next, log in as admin at Kasm local. The credentials are given at the end of the installation process. Furthermore, when you log in as an admin, you must access the admin and user panels. You can add users, groups, and group settings from the admin panel to configure authentication providers, such as saml or LDAP, view activities, track activities, and others.

How to create the first session

After you successfully get Kasm Workspaces installed and configured, you can create your first session. The application launcher has many applications you can choose from but let’s start with a desktop session. First, when you launch a session, you will see a pop-up notification with instructions for accessing the control panel. Then, when the session is going on, you will observe that the control panel is accessible from the tab on the center-left of the screen.

The control panel allows users to upload and download files between their local systems. Next, the remote Desktop enables the microphone, sets video quality, and uses the clipboard. Also, if you use a chromium-based browser, your clipboard will work effortlessly between your local and remote systems once you have permitted the browser. This default desktop image has standard software installed, such as Chrome, Firefox, only office, and visual studio code, to mention a few. Next, clicking the app icon will take you back to the workspace application launcher page. From here, you can see your current situation by running sessions and creating new ones.

Destroying the session destroys all the data except you have configured persistent profiles. Thus, you can configure preferences within a user’s profile settings, view session usage, set SSH keys, or download the public SSH keys.
