How does Auvik work?

Once the Auvik collector is efficaciously set up in your network, it mechanically searches on its nearby subnet to discover different networks. First, when new networks are found, users can choose whether or not to have Auvik test them. Secondly, after they approve scanning, Auvik uses a device known as Nmap to perceive energetic hosts on the network. After that, the system looks for open ports to help identify many traits of the host, including make and model.

During the network scan, Auvik looks for network devices that expose the following information:

  • ARP tables
  • Forwarding tables (Layer 2)
  • IP assignments
  • VLAN associations
  • Layer 1 discovery protocols, such as Link Layer Discovery Protocol (LLDP), Cisco Discovery Protocol (CDP), and Foundry Discovery Protocol (FDP)

All in all, Auvik discovers all the network topology and device information.

Integrating Auvik with Freshdesk

People can configure the integration between Freshdesk and Auvik for one-way communication. First, one-way communication goes from Auvik to Freshdesk. Then, Auvik creates a Freshdesk carrier ticket for any unique alert within Auvik. When the alert closes or is dismissed, the update flows back to Freshdesk to complete the associated service ticket.

So, the steps that need to follow are below:

  • Firstly, from the dashboard, click Integrations in the side navigation bar.
  • Secondly, hover over the Add Integration button, and choose Freshdesk.
  • Further, fill in the details for the new integration.
  • Finally, copy the call-back URL by clicking the Copy button.

Once you’ve copied the call-back URL, please don’t close this window. You’ll need it again later to complete the setup within Auvik. If you close the window before setup is complete, you’ll need to go back and update the call-back URL previously copied and entered for the Automations rule in Freshdesk.

Auvik Review Conclusions

To conclude, we found Auvik a terrific tool for mapping your networks. It’s lovely to get an overall view of your networked gadgets and how they all connect. It’s also terrific for troubleshooting outages and connection issues because you can see the whole thing, including the actual transfer ports being used.

But our absolute favorite part of Auvik is the invention portion. It allows customers to back up their network devices, which we believe is a great feature. Moreover, it makes onboarding new customers easier for less experienced engineers, as it does an excellent job of finding devices and directing them to enter credentials to manage them.

In summary, it makes the entire network more “visible” with the diagram it draws and the constant discovery of network devices. I love the automatic configuration backups of switches/routers and the versioning. Likewise, I also love the visual of figuring out which port something is plugged into quickly. As a result, it takes that burden off more experienced staff.
