What is ActiveCampaign?
ActiveCampaign is a popular, all-in-one marketing platform that lets you build engaging, data-driven marketing campaigns, including landing pages, email, SMS, WhatsApp, and automation, all without needing code. ActiveCampaign serves over 180k businesses worldwide, and was founded in Chicago in 2003.
Initially focused on medium and small-sized enterprises, over time, they developed an autonomous marketing platform that allows users to type in a goal like “increase repeat purchases” and then ActiveCampaign’s 25+ agents build and optimize a cross-channel campaign complete with content, segmentation, and timing, in minutes.
Additionally, ActiveCampaign provides a smooth transition for new customers. Unlike other platforms that leave you to figure it out or charge extra for services, ActiveCampaign assigns an onboarding specialist, AI or live, to migrate your contacts, automations, and campaigns, so you’re running on day one without disruption. You don’t have to start from a blank canvas. ActiveCampaign offers 900+ automation templates (like abandoned cart, win-back, or lead nurture) that you can launch instantly, then fine-tune with AI suggestions based on your business data.
The user-friendly interface and easy-to-use features allow anyone to set up basic automation and experiment with unique features. While traditional tools force teams through long setup cycles and training, ActiveCampaign delivers measurable lifts in engagement and conversions in days, because execution and optimization happen automatically, not after weeks of manual configuration.

User Sentiment - ActiveCampaign Reviews
-
Email marketing automation engine
Users frequently praise ActiveCampaign for flexible, visual automations that support complex email marketing journeys, conditional logic, and advanced segmentation without needing custom development. The automation tools make it easy to build drip campaigns and workflow sequences.
-
Strong email deliverability at scale
Many ActiveCampaign reviews mention solid email deliverability, reliable sending, and a capable email marketing editor with templates, A/B testing options, and personalization at scale. Email marketing agencies report consistently high inbox placement rates.
-
Value for email and CRM features
Across G2, GetApp, and Capterra, reviewers often feel the platform delivers strong value for email marketing platforms of its class and CRM marketing capabilities compared to enterprise alternatives, especially for SMBs and digital marketing agencies.
-
Unified contact and deal management
Users appreciate the customer management system aspects, where contact histories, tags, custom fields, and deals connect in one platform, reducing the need to stitch together separate CRM tools and email marketing software.
-
Wide marketing automation integrations
ActiveCampaign integrates with ecommerce automation platforms, forms, landing page builders, and other SaaS marketing automation software, which reviewers say makes it easier to embed into existing stacks and automate more of the sales funnel.
-
Learning curve for new users
A recurring theme in ActiveCampaign pros and cons is that new users can feel overwhelmed by the email marketing automation interface and automation options, especially without prior marketing automation software experience or training from marketing automation best practices guides.
-
UI feels busy and dated
Some reviewers describe the email marketing platform UI as busy or dated compared with newer marketing automation tools, making it harder to quickly navigate contact management, email marketing features, or reporting dashboards.
-
Support responsiveness varies by plan
While many customers report helpful support from the marketing automation team, others mention slow response times or variable depth of technical assistance, particularly at lower-tier plans or for complex marketing automation examples.
-
Too complex for basic use cases
A subset of users running only basic newsletters or simple email marketing campaigns feel ActiveCampaign’s marketing automation software is overly complex and would prefer a lighter-weight email marketing platform for straightforward needs.
-
Costs climb with contact growth
ActiveCampaign pricing reviews indicate that costs can climb significantly as contact lists grow and advanced marketing automation software features scale, leading some teams to reassess at growth stages or explore more affordable marketing automation alternatives.

What do you like best about ActiveCampaign
In 2020, we were using Mailchimp + Hubspot Free CRM and everything was cobbled together and communication between systems was a mess.
We moved to AC, consolidated under one roof, had loads of native integrations (Calendly, Segment, Bonjoro etc) and it was immediately a night and day difference.
What would you improve about ActiveCampaign
I would love to see ActiveCampaign continue to develop the dashboard and visual reporting. The reports are good, but visualization could be improved.

Table of Contents
ActiveCampaign has spent over two decades refining its approach to marketing automation, and the 2026 version of the platform reflects that experience. With over 180,000 customers, a G2 rating of 4.5 out of 5 from more than 14,500 reviews, and a Spring 2026 product overhaul centered on AI-powered autonomous agents, this is a platform that continues to push the boundaries of what mid-market teams can automate.
But does it deliver enough value for the price – and is it the right fit for your business?
In this ActiveCampaign review, we break down everything from core features and pricing to real limitations and ideal use cases, so you can make an informed decision.
ActiveCampaign Features That Matter Most
ActiveCampaign positions itself as an “autonomous marketing” platform – a term it introduced at its Spring 2026 keynote to describe a system where AI handles campaign decisions, audience segmentation, and timing without constant manual input. That vision is built on a feature set that spans email marketing, CRM, sales automation, and more.
Email Marketing and Campaign Builder
The drag-and-drop email builder supports HTML templates, conditional content blocks, and predictive sending. You can personalize emails based on contact behavior, purchase history, or custom field data. ActiveCampaign also offers over 250 pre-built email templates, which saves time for teams without dedicated designers.
Where it stands out is in send-time optimization. The platform analyzes each contact’s engagement history and delivers emails at the moment they’re most likely to open – a feature that directly impacts open rates without requiring any manual A/B testing.
Marketing Automation
This is where ActiveCampaign earns its reputation. The visual automation builder lets you create multi-step workflows triggered by virtually any event – form submissions, site visits, purchase behavior, email engagement, or custom API events. You can branch workflows with if/else logic, add wait conditions, and integrate CRM actions directly into automation sequences.
The platform now includes over 25 AI-powered automation agents introduced in 2026. These agents handle tasks like lead scoring adjustments, campaign optimization, audience segmentation, and even content suggestions – all running autonomously in the background.
Built-in CRM and Sales Automation
Unlike many email marketing tools that bolt on a basic CRM as an afterthought, ActiveCampaign’s CRM is genuinely functional. It includes pipeline management, deal tracking, lead scoring, and automated task assignments for sales teams. You can trigger sales automation workflows when deals move between stages, ensuring follow-ups happen without manual intervention.
The CRM also supports win probability scoring powered by machine learning, which helps sales teams prioritize the deals most likely to close.
Landing Pages and Forms
ActiveCampaign includes a built-in landing page builder with drag-and-drop editing, mobile optimization, and direct integration with automation workflows. Forms can be embedded, pop-up, or inline, and all form submissions automatically feed into your contact database and trigger relevant automations.
Integrations Ecosystem
With over 900 integrations – including Shopify, WooCommerce, Salesforce, WordPress, Zapier, and virtually every major SaaS tool – ActiveCampaign fits into almost any existing tech stack. The platform also offers a robust API for custom integrations.
ActiveCampaign Pros and Cons
After evaluating the platform across multiple use cases, here is what stands out – both positively and negatively.
- Industry-leading automation builder: The visual workflow editor is among the most powerful available at this price point, with branching logic, conditional waits, and deep CRM integration.
- AI-powered autonomous agents: The 25+ AI agents introduced in 2026 handle tedious optimization tasks like send-time selection, audience segmentation, and lead scoring automatically.
- Generous account seats: All plans include up to 25 user accounts, which is rare among competitors that charge per seat.
- Free migration service: ActiveCampaign offers free migration from other platforms, including importing contacts, rebuilding automations, and recreating email templates.
- 900+ native integrations: One of the largest integration ecosystems in the marketing automation space, reducing the need for middleware tools.
- Strong deliverability reputation: Consistently ranks among the top platforms for email deliverability in independent tests.
- Charges for unsubscribed contacts: Since November 2025, ActiveCampaign counts unsubscribed contacts toward your contact limit. This can inflate costs significantly if you have a large list with many inactive subscribers.
- Steep pricing jumps between tiers: The gap between the Lite plan ($15/mo) and Plus plan ($49/mo) is manageable, but jumping to Professional ($79/mo) or Enterprise ($145/mo) adds up quickly, especially as contact counts grow.
- Overwhelming for beginners: The depth of features means new users face a significant learning curve. The automation builder alone has dozens of trigger types, conditions, and actions that take time to master.
- Reporting could be deeper: While adequate for most use cases, the built-in analytics lack the granularity that data-heavy teams might expect from a platform at this price level.
- No free plan available: Unlike competitors such as Mailchimp or Brevo, ActiveCampaign only offers a 14-day free trial with no permanent free tier.
ActiveCampaign Pricing Overview
ActiveCampaign offers four pricing tiers, all based on contact count. Prices below reflect annual billing for 1,000 contacts – monthly billing is approximately 20-30% higher.
- Starter – $15/month: Email marketing, marketing automation, inline forms, site tracking, API and webhooks, over 900 integrations. Limited to 1 user.
- Plus – $49/month: Everything in Starter plus landing pages, CRM with sales automation, lead scoring, SMS marketing, custom audiences, and up to 25 users.
- Pro – $79/month: Everything in Plus plus predictive sending, split automations, site messaging, attribution reporting, and AI-powered content suggestions.
- Enterprise – $145/month: Everything in Pro plus custom reporting, custom objects, HIPAA support, dedicated account manager, and uptime SLA.
Prices scale with contact count. At 10,000 contacts, expect to pay roughly $180-$400/month depending on the plan. For a detailed breakdown of every tier, feature comparison, and hidden costs, see our full ActiveCampaign pricing review.
Who Is ActiveCampaign Best For?
ActiveCampaign is not a one-size-fits-all tool. Its depth makes it ideal for certain teams and potentially overkill for others.
ActiveCampaign for Small Businesses and Startups
If you are a small team that relies on email as a primary revenue channel – think ecommerce brands, SaaS startups, or service businesses with lead nurturing needs – ActiveCampaign’s Starter and Plus plans offer serious automation power at a reasonable price. The 25-user seat allowance on Plus means your whole team can access the platform without per-seat charges eating into the budget.
However, if you just need basic email newsletters with no automation, simpler tools like Mailchimp may be more cost-effective.
ActiveCampaign for Mid-Market and Growing Teams
This is ActiveCampaign’s sweet spot. Teams managing 5,000-100,000 contacts who need sophisticated automation, CRM integration, and multi-channel campaigns will find the Pro and Enterprise plans justify their cost. The AI agents handle optimization tasks that would otherwise require a dedicated marketing ops person.
ActiveCampaign for Ecommerce
With deep Shopify, WooCommerce, and BigCommerce integrations, ActiveCampaign handles abandoned cart recovery, post-purchase sequences, product recommendation emails, and customer win-back campaigns natively. The predictive sending feature ensures promotional emails land when each customer is most likely to buy.
ActiveCampaign for Agencies
The 25-user account limit and robust automation capabilities make ActiveCampaign practical for agencies managing multiple client accounts. However, the pricing scales with total contacts across all accounts, so agencies with large aggregate lists should calculate costs carefully.
How ActiveCampaign Compares to Alternatives
Choosing marketing automation software often comes down to specific trade-offs. Here is how ActiveCampaign stacks up against the tools it competes with most directly.
ActiveCampaign vs Mailchimp
Mailchimp offers a free plan and a more beginner-friendly interface, but its automation capabilities are significantly more limited. ActiveCampaign wins on automation depth, CRM functionality, and deliverability. Mailchimp wins on ease of entry and brand recognition. For teams that have outgrown basic email blasts and need real automation workflows, ActiveCampaign is the stronger choice. Read our full ActiveCampaign vs Mailchimp article for a detailed comparison.
ActiveCampaign vs HubSpot
HubSpot’s Marketing Hub offers comparable automation features but at a significantly higher price point – the Professional tier starts at $800/month. ActiveCampaign delivers 80-90% of the automation functionality at a fraction of the cost. HubSpot wins if you need an all-in-one platform with deep sales, service, and CMS integration. ActiveCampaign wins on value for money and automation sophistication per dollar spent. See our HubSpot CRM review for more details.
ActiveCampaign vs Klaviyo
Klaviyo is purpose-built for ecommerce with stronger native Shopify integration and more granular product-level segmentation. ActiveCampaign is the better all-rounder – stronger CRM, more versatile automation, and better suited for businesses that combine ecommerce with lead generation or service-based workflows. Check our ActiveCampaign vs Klaviyo article for a full breakdown.
ActiveCampaign vs Brevo
Brevo (formerly Sendinblue) competes on price with a generous free tier and lower entry costs. However, its automation builder is less sophisticated, and the CRM functionality is more basic. ActiveCampaign is the better investment for teams that need advanced workflows and will grow into the platform’s capabilities. Read our Brevo review for the full picture.
ActiveCampaign Review – Our Verdict
ActiveCampaign remains one of the strongest marketing automation platforms available in 2026, particularly for mid-market teams that need sophisticated workflows without enterprise-level pricing. The addition of AI-powered autonomous agents, the 900+ integration ecosystem, and the genuinely useful built-in CRM make it a compelling package.
The downsides are real – the learning curve is steep, the contact-based pricing penalizes large lists (especially now that unsubscribed contacts count), and the reporting tools could be more advanced. But for teams willing to invest the setup time, the automation ROI is substantial.

ActiveCampaign FAQ
ActiveCampaign is rated 4.5 out of 5 on G2 based on over 14,500 reviews, making it one of the highest-rated marketing automation platforms available. Its core strength is the visual automation builder, which supports complex multi-step workflows with branching logic, conditional waits, and CRM integration. The 2026 release added 25+ AI agents that automate optimization tasks like send-time selection and audience segmentation.
The platform works best for small to mid-market teams that need advanced automation without the cost of enterprise tools like HubSpot or Marketo. It is less ideal for teams that only need basic email newsletters.
ActiveCampaign is used primarily for email marketing, marketing automation, CRM, and sales automation. Common use cases include automated email sequences, lead nurturing workflows, abandoned cart recovery for ecommerce, lead scoring, pipeline management, and multi-channel campaigns combining email, SMS, and site messaging. The platform supports over 900 integrations with tools like Shopify, WooCommerce, Salesforce, WordPress, and Zapier.
ActiveCampaign is significantly more powerful than Mailchimp for automation and CRM functionality. Where Mailchimp offers a free plan and an easier learning curve, ActiveCampaign provides deeper workflow automation, better deliverability, a functional built-in CRM, and more advanced segmentation. If you need more than basic email campaigns, ActiveCampaign is the stronger choice.
The answer depends on your specific needs. HubSpot offers a more comprehensive all-in-one suite but costs significantly more. Klaviyo is stronger for pure ecommerce use cases with deeper Shopify integration. Brevo is cheaper for teams on a tight budget. For most mid-market businesses that need strong automation and CRM together, ActiveCampaign remains one of the best value options available.
ActiveCampaign pricing starts at $15 per month (billed annually) for the Starter plan with 1,000 contacts. The Plus plan is $49/month, Pro is $79/month, and Enterprise is $145/month. Prices increase with contact count – at 10,000 contacts, expect $180 to $400/month depending on the tier. Monthly billing adds approximately 20-30% to these prices.
Yes, ActiveCampaign offers a 14-day free trial that does not require a credit card. The trial gives you access to most features so you can test automation workflows, the CRM, and email campaigns before committing. There is no permanent free plan – once the trial ends, you need to choose a paid tier.
ActiveCampaign is a strong choice for ecommerce businesses, with native integrations for Shopify, WooCommerce, and BigCommerce. It supports abandoned cart recovery, post-purchase email sequences, product recommendation workflows, and customer win-back campaigns. The predictive sending feature optimizes delivery times for each individual customer. For pure ecommerce with Shopify as the primary platform, Klaviyo offers slightly deeper product-level integration, but ActiveCampaign is the better option if you also need CRM and sales automation alongside your ecommerce workflows.
Yes. Since November 2025, ActiveCampaign counts unsubscribed contacts toward your contact limit. This means contacts who have opted out of your emails still occupy space in your plan and affect your billing. To manage costs, you should regularly clean your contact list by deleting truly inactive or unsubscribed contacts that you no longer need for reporting purposes.
